On Learning and why you should Learn daily
The greatest joy there is
Recently I fell into a learning slump.
I wasn't reading, writing or taking in new information that would benefit me. And honestly it felt draining, not progressing each day, not learning new things.
Because, as we know, stagnation doesn't mean staying in one place for a long time. Stagnation is actually you regressing and not levelling up.
So after a few months of my learning slump and lack of motivation to expand my mind and explore the world, I realised that something needed to change.
I needed to get back to my old routine of learning daily.
Why we should all Learn Daily
As I stated earlier, if you are in stagnation, you are actually regressing.
I fundamentally believe that each day, we should strive to become a better version of the person we were yesterday.
And learning is fundamental to that ideal.
By learning and taking in knowledge, not only do you equip yourself with the moving landscape of the world, but you also prepare yourself to take advantage of opportunities that present themselves to you, due to the fact you understand it at a fundamental and unique level.
"Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity"
- Seneca
A vital part of your preparation is being aware of all the moving parts in any given system.
That's the serious reason as to why you should learn daily.
But in truth, learning new things each day is fun.
There really isn't any greater feeling than learning a truth about the world or about a topic that you didn't know previously and using that understanding to create.
Now let's dive into how you start this journey.
Where to Start
Starting is often the hardest part of this entire process. This is because we naturally overestimate the knowledge and readiness we need before jumping into the unknown.
But here's the truth: you don't need to be ready or prepared.
Just search up a list of subjects, topics, or skills you are curious about.
Gather resources like books and begin, taking in the information for 30 minutes a day.
I did this recently by learning machine learning and deep learning.
It was a topic I was always fascinated with, as it is modelled after the human brain, so naturally it got me curious.
From there I gathered courses and began my journey.
One thing to keep in mind, Learn by doing, not watching.
For each subject, skill or topic you are wishing to learn, outline a project to help you tailor your learning journey.
This is so you don't get trapped within the endless sea of knowledge.
Some common types of projects I like to do are writing an essay like this about a particular topic I've learnt and sharing it with others and online.
Or for a skill like machine learning, I'll create an actual project using the knowledge I've gained.
Focus on starting, and the journey will present itself to you.
The path moving forward (what the future holds)
I don't know what the future holds, but what I can say is this.
When I began my learning journey, I met people more interesting than me and people I aspire to be like.
Alongside projects that I am so passionate about.
Going outside your comfort zone by learning new things will always be a net positive for you and the people around you.
Don't hold back.
